MedNext Formulary: The Complete Guide for Healthcare Professionals

A walkthrough of every feature in MedNext Formulary — from drug monographs and AI search to interaction checking and dosing calculators.

Clinically reviewed by MedNext Clinical Team(10 March 2026)

MedNext Formulary is a comprehensive drug reference platform designed specifically for healthcare professionals. Whether you are a doctor, pharmacist, nurse, or medical student, this guide will help you get the most out of every feature. Available on iOS and Android, MedNext puts 2,866 drugs from the MedNext Audited Proprietary Dataset at your fingertips.

Getting Started

Download MedNext Formulary from the App Store or Google Play. New users receive a 7-day free trial of PRO features, giving you full access to explore everything the app offers. After the trial, you can continue with the free tier (drug index browsing with keyword search) or upgrade to PRO for the complete clinical toolkit.

Drug Monographs

The core of MedNext is its drug database, organised into three formularies:

- Adult Formulary — 1,736 drugs covering the full spectrum of adult medicine

- Paediatric Formulary — 1,066 drugs with age and weight-specific dosing

- Controlled Drugs Formulary — 64 controlled substances with prescribing requirements

Each monograph includes indications, dosing regimens, contraindications, side effects, monitoring parameters, and clinical notes. Drug information is compiled from publicly available UK regulatory sources (MHRA-approved Summaries of Product Characteristics) and reviewed by our clinical team.

AI-Powered Semantic Search

MedNext PRO includes an AI-powered semantic search that understands natural language queries. Instead of needing to know the exact drug name, you can search by clinical scenario — for example, "antibiotic for lower UTI in pregnancy" or "antihypertensive safe in breastfeeding." The system uses vector-based search across 768 dimensions to find the most relevant results.

You can also search by trade name. MedNext includes 2,710 brand-to-generic mappings, so searching "Nurofen" will correctly return ibuprofen, and searching "Augmentin" will return co-amoxiclav.

Drug Interaction Checker

The interaction checker lets you select multiple drugs and instantly see all known interactions between them. Results are graded by severity — minor, moderate, severe, and critical — with clinical explanations for each. The database covers over 14,600 interactions and is continuously updated.

Medical Calculators

Fourteen built-in calculators handle common clinical calculations, each citing the peer-reviewed source for its formula:

- BMI Calculator — WHO classification (WHO Technical Report Series 894, 2000)

- Creatinine Clearance — Cockcroft-Gault equation (Cockcroft & Gault, Nephron, 1976)

- eGFR — CKD-EPI 2021 race-free formula (Inker et al., N Engl J Med, 2021)

- CHA₂DS₂-VASc Score — stroke risk in AF (Lip et al., Chest, 2010; ESC 2020 Guidelines)

- HAS-BLED Score — bleeding risk on anticoagulation (Pisters et al., Chest, 2010)

- QTc Calculator — Bazett's formula (Bazett, Heart, 1920)

- CURB-65 — pneumonia severity (Lim et al., Thorax, 2003)

- Wells Score — DVT probability (Wells et al., Lancet, 1997)

- Glasgow Coma Scale (Teasdale & Jennett, Lancet, 1974)

- APGAR Score — neonatal assessment (Apgar, Anesth Analg, 1953)

- Parkland Formula — burns fluid resuscitation (Baxter & Shires, 1968)

- Sodium Correction — hyponatremia management (Adrogue & Madias, N Engl J Med, 2000)

- Weight-based Pediatric Dosing (mg/kg)

- IV Drip Rate Calculator

All calculators run locally on your device — no internet connection required, no patient data transmitted. Full references with PubMed links are displayed within each calculator in the app.

Multi-Language Support

MedNext supports 38 languages, including full right-to-left (RTL) support for Arabic, Hebrew, and Urdu. This makes it accessible to healthcare teams worldwide, from London to Lagos to Lahore.

Specialty Packs

Specialty packs bundle drugs by clinical area — cardiology, oncology, emergency medicine, and more. These curated collections help you quickly find the drugs most relevant to your practice.

Privacy and Security

MedNext uses an online-only architecture with zero drug data stored in the app binary. All data is encrypted with AES-256, sessions time out after 30 minutes of inactivity, and we never collect or store patient data. Your clinical searches remain private.
