How MedNext CESR Works
From choosing your specialty to a clean, assessor-ready GMC submission — with built-in redaction and AI evidence checks at every step.
Select Your Specialty
Browse the full directory of GMC specialties on the Portfolio Pathway. Each specialty page shows its competency framework, evidence sections, currency window, and the official SSG PDF linked directly.
Every specialty uses one of 8 framework types — CiPs, HLOs, SLOs, HiLLOs, HLLOs, Capabilities, Key Areas, or Learning Outcomes. MedNext maps the full structure from official GMC Specialty Specific Guidance documents. All specialty pages are free to browse without an account.
Upload and Map Evidence
Upload PDFs, DOCX, JPG, PNG, screenshots, and scans. DOC/DOCX files are automatically converted to PDF preserving layout. Images are prepared for clean inclusion in your submission pack.
Map each file to the correct SSG section or framework unit. One document can satisfy multiple requirements — assign it to as many sections as it covers. You can also save documents as Additional Evidence for the appendix if they support your application without belonging to a specific section.
AI Evidence Analysis
AI-poweredAfter uploading, each file can be checked by AI against the SSG requirements it is mapped to. The analysis reads the document and assesses whether the content is relevant and appropriate for the section.
This is not automated gatekeeping — you stay in control of what goes in your portfolio. The AI check is a second pair of eyes: it can flag if a document looks mismatched (e.g., a teaching certificate mapped to a surgical competency section), catch obvious errors before your evaluator does, and help you identify stronger evidence for weak sections.
Redact Patient Data
Data safetyEvery file must be reviewed before export. Open each document in the built-in viewer, draw black redaction boxes directly over patient names, NHS numbers, dates of birth, and any other identifiers. The app creates a clean redacted PDF copy — your original file is untouched.
If a document contains no patient data — a course certificate, publication, or audit summary — you can confirm it as safe without redacting. Export is blocked until every file in your workspace is either redacted or confirmed safe. This is enforced, not optional, so nothing leaves your workspace unreviewed.
Track Readiness and Gaps
A section-by-section dashboard shows coverage across all SSG evidence sections and framework units. See which sections are well-evidenced, where gaps remain, and what the next action is for each.
Currency monitoring flags evidence approaching its expiry date. Volume targets track minimum case counts and assessor counts where the SSG specifies them. The dashboard updates in real time as you add, remove, or move evidence.
Review and Export for GMC
Generate clean assessor-ready PDF packs grouped by SSG section, each with a cover page and evidence index. Open and review the generated PDFs inside the app before downloading — save an edited copy if needed.
Exported packs contain no MedNext branding. Partial sections export when confirmed evidence exists, so you can share work-in-progress packs with a mentor or adviser. Additional Evidence exports as its own appendix pack alongside the main section PDFs. Download and upload directly to the GMC website.
Redaction, in Detail
Anonymising evidence for GMC submission is a clinical governance requirement. Here is exactly how MedNext handles it.
Open in built-in viewer
Every uploaded file can be opened in the in-app PDF viewer without leaving MedNext. No need to download files to your device to review them.
Draw redaction boxes
Click and drag to place solid black boxes over any patient names, NHS numbers, dates of birth, addresses, or other identifiers visible in the document.
Clean copy created
Saving creates a new redacted PDF with the boxes permanently burned in. Your original file remains untouched in your workspace — you can re-redact at any time.
Mark as safe (no patient data)
For documents with no patient data — certificates, publications, audit summaries — mark them as safe. This counts as reviewed and unblocks export for that file.
Export blocked until complete
If any file in your workspace is unreviewed, the export button is disabled. You cannot accidentally include unredacted documents in your submission pack.
Redacted version goes into export
The export pack uses the redacted PDF copy, not the original. Assessors receive only the anonymised version. Your originals stay private in your workspace.
AI Evidence Analysis
After uploading a file, you can run an AI analysis against the SSG section it is mapped to. The AI reads the document and checks whether the content is relevant and appropriate for that requirement.
This is not automated gatekeeping. You stay in control of your portfolio. Think of it as a second pair of eyes — the kind of quick check a trusted colleague might give before you submit.
The analysis runs on demand per document. You choose when to use it. Results are shown inline and do not affect your evidence mapping or readiness tracking.
Whether the document content matches the SSG section it is mapped to — e.g. does this look like a valid workplace-based assessment for this competency?
Obvious mismatches (a teaching certificate mapped to a surgical competency section), missing key elements, or content that may not satisfy the requirement as written in the SSG.
It does not approve or reject evidence, does not guarantee GMC acceptance, and does not modify your portfolio. All decisions remain yours.
Documents are processed securely for analysis and are not retained or used for training. Only you can trigger an analysis on your files.
